In my last blog posting, I asked the followers of Love At First Slice what their favorite pizza toppings are. Two people responded and the long process of tallying the votes is over. The answers are unanimous on #1 and #2 pizza toppings. Classic answers... cheeses and pepperoni!
Love At First Slice follower Joseph D. made an interesting point about location of pizza chains. Joseph's favorite pizza comes from a boardwalk pizza shop by his house. Being a New Jersey native, I am no stranger to boardwalk pizza! I don't have a particular favorite boardwalk pizza spot, but most of the pizza joints by the shore serve slices as big as your head. Two plates are needed to accommodate the size of the slice.

Let's Make a List
Last night I was standing in my kitchen, trying to scrap together some food for dinner. My fridge was looking rather sad, but I did manage to pull out some shredded cheeses, crumbled bacon, and black olives. Looking at these items, I realized that these are some of my favorite pizza toppings! I decided to make a list and see if anyone matched up with my favorites.
- Black Olives
- Bacon
- Rigatoni Pasta
- Pepperoni
- "Philly Cheese Stake"
If I lost you at number 1, I apologize. I have never met another person aside from my sister who actually likes black olives.
How do our lists match up? What are your favorites?

Peace a Pizza
"Sorry, we're open" doesn't seem like a business you'd want to go to. The next pizzeria to taste test on the list requires a small journey into town. Nearby is Buddy's Burgers and Baco Juice and Taco, but make the right decision and head right in to Peace a Pizza. The laid back atmosphere and amazing smells will make you want to stay forever!
Bacon Cheeseburger Pizza
Crust Strength: 7/10
I was very impressed with the crust strength of this slice! The bacon cheeseburger pizza has ground beef and bacon on it but the crust could still hold up the weight of the toppings. The crust was crunchy but not too flakey or dry.
Sauce: 7/10
The sauce on this pie is a tomato sauce, which is the best option in my opinon. Other pizza chains have opted for a special sauce custom made for that pizza (I'm looking at you, Papa Johns), but my motto is don't fix it if it ain't broke. Tomato sauce is a regular choice for pizza and the definite right choice for the bacon cheeseburger pizza. The sauce had a little zing to it but could've done with some more seasonings.
Cheese Coverage: 10/10
Awesome. So awesome. The pizza had a blanket of mozzarella cheese and cheddar cheese covering the slice. As the slice heated up in the oven, the cheese was melted to a perfect consistency. Cheese everywhere!
Greasiness: 4/10
Pretty greasy but wiped away easily. Grease is to be expected with pizza that has meat and cheese that have a high fat content. The fat melts in the oven and runs onto the pizza.
*Note: this category's highest score would be a 0/10, and the lowest score would be a 10/10. While calculating this pizza's score, +6 will be added to the slice's points.
TOTAL SCORE: 30/40
After calculating, 30/40 seems like a very appropriate score for the slice. Bacon cheeseburger is an "out there" recipe and I'm sure takes some time to perfect. To translate that to a grade in the American school system, this pizza is above average!

Chris's Pizza
Ah yes, Chris's Pizza. Why the extra "s"? Why not Chris' pizza? Does the extra s make the pizza more delicious? Who IS Chris?? The world may never know. What I do know is that Chris's Pizza was the first slice I had when I first came to college and will always have a special place in my heart. I try to stay loyal to Chris's as often as possible, and the service you get with this family owned business, it's nearly impossible to not want to come back for more. So, it is only logical that I make Chris's Pizza my first post for Love at First Slice.
Plain Slice
Crust Strength: 3/10
This slice could not hold its own. The crust was by no means falling apart, however the slice would flop down directly below where your hands are placed. This may be expected by pizzas with toppings because of the weight of the slice, but this was a plain slice. It is very important to note that I got to Chris's about 40 minutes before closing, so the slice I got wasn't fresh out of the oven. I expect that if I had gotten there earlier the crust would've held up better.
Sauce: 9/10
Sauce distribution was just right. There wasn't so much sauce that you couldn't take a bite without it spilling out, but there was enough that you can tell there is sauce present. The sauce was also spread out evenly so there were not any peaks, valleys, or pockets of sauce.
Cheese Coverage: 8/10
The cheese was sprinkled evenly over the pizza, so there weren't any patches of sauce showing through thinly spread cheese. There was no cheese drag, but that was likely due to the combination of it being an older slice as well as not being heated up enough.
Greasiness: 1/10
No grease dripped off as I ate the pizza, but did leave a small oil stain on the box it was sitting in.
*Note: this category's highest score would be a 0/10, and the lowest score would be a 10/10. While calculating this pizza's score, +9 will be added to the slice's points.
TOTAL SCORE: 29/40
Overall, a pretty great score for a plain slice of pizza! The crust strength was the only disappointing part of the slice, but I am mostly to blame. Chris's is always bringing out new pies, especially during rush times (I know you've all been there once on a Friday night. You know what I'm talking about). Sunday night at 11:20pm is not exactly a time where making a fresh pie makes sense. I definitely should have gone during the day or during a rush time this weekend to have a more accurate review. I don't think a 29/40 is at all a typical reflection of Chris's Pizza's craftsmanship.

Welcome
Hi, internet! Welcome to Love At First Slice, the cheesiest blog on the web. If there's one thing I think most of the population can agree on, it's that pizza is a staple fast food. A nationwide survey found that the average American will eat 6,000 slices of pizza in their lifetime.
I am no exception to this statistic. I am a pizza aficionado. I ate a half a pizza the night before a pageant with no regrets. I've worked in the pizza industry for a combined 5 years. I've had the experiences of working for a pizza chain and a mom & pop pizzeria. When I would tell people I worked at a pizza place, they'd often ask me "don't you get sick of pizza?" The answer is a firm "hell no". I understand the reasoning of why people don't like to bring work home with them, but I worked in an environment I loved... surrounded by pizza.
So why am I telling you about this? Maybe you don't have a big appetite. Maybe you're sensitive to lactose. Maybe you can't eat 13 slices of pizza in a week. Maybe your "college student budget" only allows you to get a $2 plain slice at Riggtown because you spent the rest of your budget at the bars. I'm telling you this because you need me. I'm the hero West Chester deserves. I'm ready to put the pizzerias of West Chester to the test. I'd like to make my blog the go-to place to answer the question every West Chester University student finds themselves asking.
"Where should I get pizza from tonight?"

Smiling because I get to serve pizza, paint pizza art, and spend Valentine's Day with pizza |
